British International School Gdańsk

Languages - English

At BISG, English is the primary medium of instruction. We follow the British school system for teaching English, ensuring high standards.

While we support students with limited English proficiency, our English lessons are not designed as additional language classes. Instead, we tailor our teaching methods to accommodate various ability levels, providing a differentiated learning experience for all students.

We support students who are new to English with small group work and EAL (English Additional Language) support but there is an expectation from class 4 onwards that students are becoming more independent in their learning of English.

At BISG, students experience English through various genres, including stories, diaries, letters, instructions, poetry, reports, news articles, and more. Our well-resourced library allows students to change books as needed.

We encourage students to read regularly at home. Each week, children take home English books to read, as frequent reading enhances their competence as writers and users of English. Reading at home with or to a parent is also a valuable and cherished time.

F rom a young age, our students learn to appreciate the richness of English and produce written work they can be proud of. Starting from Class 4, the teaching of English broadens, offering greater opportunities for creativity.

Students produce written and spoken outcomes in various genres, including science fiction, myths and legends, fables, adventure stories, historical fiction, drama, Shakespeare, poetry, reports, explanations, news items, discussions, life-writing, formal letters, and more

Spelling and grammar are explicitly taught through our SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation, and Grammar) program.

We also expect students to read regularly at home to reinforce their learning.”pelling and grammar is taught explicitly through our SPaG (Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar) programme and students are expected to read regularly at home.
